Always Look on the Bright Side of Life is the Song That Makes me Smile
72Eric Idle, Monty Python, Life of Brian and that song, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, make me smile. The song is one of those simple little ditties that sticks in your head but you don't mind. It is such a feel good song that it doesn’t matter if you find the lyrics repeating themselves over and over for the rest of the day. There is nothing better than a simple ditty that simply makes you feel good. For me, the theme from Monty Python’s Life of Brian is that song.
Monty Python
The Monty Python crew came into my life when I was in my teens and I have to admit I didn’t find them a bit funny at the time. It was my most conservative uncle who watched the show religiously on a weekly basis. I was staying with him and my aunt at the time and I could not understand why the world as we knew it stopped for sixty minutes on a Saturday night. I had no idea what he was laughing about.
Did the sketches get funnier as I matured or was it once the gang started to produce movies, my sense of humour had changed? There are still some bits from the show and their movies where I feel they just went that little bit too far, but for the most I can easily laugh till I cry even if I’ve seen the skit a hundred times. In fact some of it gets funnier the more times I watch. The anticipation of knowing what’s coming next, trying to hold back the chuckle until the appropriate moment can be challenging.

Monty Python on YouTube
Monty Python launched their own video channel on YouTube as a way of fighting back against the rip offs that have been playing on the site for years. They say their clips will be brand new, high quality versions instead of the rubbish that’s already out there.
Some of my favourite songs from Monty Python
- The Lumberjack Song
- Knights of the Round Table
- Always Look on the Bright Side of Life
Eric Idle on YouTube
Eric Idle takes a few minutes to respond to some of the absurd questions asked by YouTube fans and followers.
From the Movie Life of Brian
The Life of Brian is a light hearted movie about the Messiah, even though his mother claims, "he's not the Messiah, he's just a very naughty boy". At the moment of crucifixion when Brian starts to feel despondent, a voice from the left says, "cheer up Brian, don't grumble give a whistle" and always looks on the bright side of life.

30 Day Song Challenge
This is my contribution to Song 3 in the 30 Day Song Challenge - A Song That Makes You Happy. Always Look on the Bright Side of Life is not the only song that makes me happy, but it sure does make me smile every time I hear it.
Song 1 - Your Favourite Song
- Why Leonard Cohens Best Ever Song Hallelujah is my Favourite and Why I Prefer the KD Lang Version
Leonard Cohens version of Hallelujah may be raw, rough and ready, but for a number of performers it has been delivered in the true spirit of everything Cohen meant it to be when he wrote it. Leonard Cohen... - 30 Day Song Challenge, day 1: Cat Stevens - Wild World
What a better way to start the challenge than with my favorite song of all times. And I thought this will be a difficult challenge to follow. Heh, was I wrong or what? Ok, so, my favorite song of all times...
Song 2 - Your Least Favourite Song
- Beyonc Single Ladies Good Lyrics But the Video Clip is all Wrong
Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) by Beyonc may have a good beat and the lyrics come with a message but the video is all wrong. Is this enough to name Single Ladies as my least favourite song? This is Day 2...

Hi Karanda what a brilliant song choice. Eric Idol thought the song up, to end the movie on a cheerier note. I loved Monty Python, but only about fifteen minutes of the one hour was great, the rest was rubbish. The four Yorkshire-men is my all time favourite, you have to know how Yorkshire-men act to fully appreciate it, but they do make it rather plain how dour those men can be. The black Knight and the cheese shop sketch are great. There's also a sketch about Michael Palin wanting to be a Lion tamer, with John Cleese interviewing him, that is hilarious. I loved their sketches the most, as they were well thought out, not completely stupid. I went to see the spamalot on stage a few years back. It was brilliant with a few slight changes. I'll have a look at the videos in the morning as i'm crook with the flu or some sort of bug. Cheers what a genius you are with this choice because it's funny and a nice song to boot.
After reading and enjoying all that you've put into this Hub...I'm willing to give Monte Python a second try in my old age...This was all so very good and funny! Thanks for sharing and opening this one up to us!
You are so right that music can evoke such strong feelings in us! Thanks for reminding me to recall the songs that make me happy.
Like you, I wasn’t very fond of the Monty Python shows when they were first shown on television, and I agree that they went too far in some of their sketches. Now I find parts of the shows very funny. Thanks for an entertaining hub - it’s encouraged me to explore Monty Python some more.?
Hi Karanda-I've not heard this song before. I never followed MP when I was younger--not sophisticated enough for their humor at the time, LOL NOw I find their work hilarious. Great video clips and song choice. Thoroughly enjoyed. Brought a chuckle to the end of a long day. Thanks. :)
Although I am an American, I truly adore Eric Idle and Monty Python. "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" is one of my all-time favorite movies. And, I remember when I was a youngster, seeing Eric Idle in Terry Gilliam's fantastical "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" and being in wonderment. Thank you for your article

So you ended up really conservative and able to mimic John Cleese at the Ministry of Funny Walks? Very Clever boys they were. My Favourites.. Black Knight and Fish Slapping! Nice One! Thanks for Reminding me about all those conservative days! Thanks for sharing.
